Junior Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition - Organ Studio, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire - Sunday 4 February 2018

Our first Junior Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition took place in the Organ Studio at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on Sunday 4 February with six trios taking part. The Jury consisted of Professor Richard Deakin (violin), Professor Jo Cole (cello) and Professor James Kirby (piano) all of whom are or have been members of a piano trio. The standard was extremely high, with a varied repertoire and with each trio presenting an interesting interpretation of the compulsary Test Piece, written especially for the event by Christopher Brammeld.

The First Prize, the Wynn Parry Prize,  presented in honour of our late Vice President, Dr Christopher Wynn Parry MBE, went to the Menuhin School Trio, the Second Prize to the Junior Royal College of Music Trio and Third Prize to the trio from the Junior  Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Well done to all - it was a most enjoyable day!

The Senior Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition will take place at the same venue on Sunday 29 April. There are eight trios taking part, with the first performance being at 10.30 and prizes presented at approximately 17.15. We are grateful to Philip Carne for supporting the prizes for the competition.  The Jury will consist of Professor Michael Bochmann MBE (violin), Professor Robert Max (cello) and Professor Benjamin Frith (piano),  all of whom are or have been members of a piano trio. There will be a compulsary Test Piece composed by Christopher Brammeld in addition to the wide repertoire of pieces offered.  Admission for observers is free, although donations are welcome!

Autumn event - Sunday 29 October - 2.00pm
Burgh House, London NW3 1LT

"Autumn Matinée with Trio Sonorité"

We returned again to the beautiful surroundings of Burgh House, New End Square, for our autumn event which featured one of our member trios. Pianist Jelena Makarova was joined by Piotr Dec, standing in at short notice for Özlem Çelik on clarinet and Daryl Guiliano on cello for a programme which included the popular Kegelstatt trio of Mozart as well as trios by Milhaud, Beethoven and Bruch and a duo by Errolynn Wallen.

We are delighted to announce that the Society will be embarking on its first Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition in 2018.  This will consist of a Junior competition on Sunday 4 February, for which the Jury will be pianist James Kirby, violinist Richard Deakin and cellist Jo Cole,  and a Senior competition on Sunday 29 April with a Jury of Benjamin Frith - piano, Michael Bochmann - violin and Robert Max - cello.  All the members of the Jury are not only renowned teachers but are or have been members of a piano trio. Both competitions will take place at the new Birmingham Conservatoire. All the music establishments have been invited to submit a trio to take part and a very wide repertoire has been offered to them so we hope for two inspiring days.  Further information will be posted in due course.

It is with sadness we report the passing of composer Malcolm Lipkin on 2 June 2017. Malcolm took part in one of our Steinway "Trio Conversation" events when he talked about his piano trio.  This had been commissioned by the English Piano Trio and subsequently recorded by them on a CD which includes trios by Berthold Goldschmidt and David Matthews. Our condolences have been sent to his family.  His trio had already been listed on the repertoire list for the Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition.

Memorial Concert for Dr Christopher Wynn Parry MBE

Saturday 11 February, 3.00pm, St Peter's Church, Notting Hill

 Kit Wynn Parry - web

Members of the Piano Trio Society were invited to join the family or Dr Wynn Parry in a Memorial Concert and Reception which included a performance of the Piano Trio by Adrian Williams by the Fidelio Trio. This was commissioned by us and is dedicated to Kit's memory. This was a most moving event which was introduced by our Administrator Christine Talbot-Cooper and with a tribute from the distinguished consultant orthopaedic and hand surgeon Ian Winspur FRCS, who had worked with Kit and shared many memories.  There then followed a performance by the Renaissance Singers of music by Byrd, Lassus and Weelkes.

Fidelio Trio small

The Fidelio Trio gave an impressive performance of the new trio and this was followed by percussionist Snowboy, who was joined by Andres Lafone (bass guitar) and Neil Angilley (piano) for a stirring Latin American item.  The concert concluded with guitartist John Williams performing three pieces in his own inimitable style. All the performers introduced
their items, giving their own special memories of Kit. The reception which followed included champagne kindly provided by the Worshipful Company of Dyers, which was used to toast Kit.  There is a full report of the event in the Spring Newsletter.
